The most recent addition to the EN 71 series of European standards has been published. The EN 71 - Part 9 revision addresses hazards posed by organic chemical compounds found in children’s toys which have not previously been covered by the EN 71 series.
The standard is the first in a series of three additions to EN 71 which also includes definitions of procedures for sample preparation and extraction and definitions of the methods of analysis, both of which are expected to be released before the end of 2005.
The standard is largely concerned with toys designed for children under the age of three since these products are likely to come into contact with the child’s mouth and skin. Manufacturers, already burdened by growing compliance legislations, have been advised to seek specialist advice as the standard covers a wide range of products, including toys which mimic food, modelling clay, imitation tattoos, imitation jewellery and wooden toys.
