Boeing has mandated that all its suppliers implement AS 9100 and receive industry-controlled other party (ICOP) certification by June 2007. Boeing will only recognise certificates from those accredited under the industry scheme developed by the international aerospace quality group (IAQG). The IAQG recently published a new document, AS 9104. This sets the minimum criteria against which the scheme can operate, and lays down minimum standards for accreditation of certification bodies and the management of the certification process. AS 9100, entitled ‘Quality systems – aerospace – model for quality assurance in design, development, production, installation and servicing’ is based on ISO 9001 and was the result of an international effort by aerospace companies with a common goal of establishing a single quality management system for use within the aerospace industry. In fact, the basic requirements are identical to ISO 9001 and readers will only see a few additional requirements in bold text within the document. These relate to traceability, configuration management and flow-down of requirements – matters which need consideration in an organisation involved in supply to the aerospace sector.
