Indexing online

As corporations race to organise and index the world’s information with increasingly sophisticated technologies, it may come as a surprise that the world foremost, and simplest, classification system is not only still going strong, but has also just been launched online.

The Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) is used in all fields of knowledge for sophisticated indexing and retrieval. It exceeds its parent, the Dewey Decimal Classification, both in terms of indexing capabilities and the size of its vocabulary. Its application is universally spread across a wide variety of mediums, from libraries and museums to bibliographies and the Internet. The online version, UDC Online, is now available electronically and is intended for organising documentation on anything that has ever been written.

BSI’s Simone Levy said ‘The main strength of the new online version of UDC is the increased functionality that makes it easier to use and apply. The logical structure of the hard copy version is preserved and it offers a highly flexible and effective system for organizing bibliographic records for all kinds of information in any medium, and is used and recognised internationally. UDC is now being used to arrange directories on the Internet’.
