A new standard for film indexing will enable a better exchange of movies between European countries. To conserve and enhance the European cinema heritage, the European Commission has mandated to the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) the harmonization of cataloguing and indexing practices of cinematographic works and the interoperability of film databases.
As a result, a technical standard will be defined to permit the interoperability of systems. Large and small production companies produce hundreds of films each year all over Europe. At the moment, 80 per cent of EU member states have an obligatory or voluntary deposit system covering all films funded by the public sector. However, these systems are very different from one another and not currently compatible. A new, clear system of cataloguing will facilitate the identification of works and the exchange of data about films.
