The 21st century ISBN

The popular book identification standard, the ISO international standard book number (ISBN), has been published in a new edition which will capacitate for future changes in publishing, bookselling and reading trends, and the advances of the internet. A vital link in the book supply chain which facilitates rights management and the monitoring of sales data, the ISBN standard has allowed unique identifiers for books, but the current ten digit numbers are running out of capacity.

The new edition of the standard, ISO 2108, will have 13 digits. Although books with the old version will not need to convert to the new number, by 1 January 2007 exisiting products will be required to convert to the 13 digit ISBN format. Although the change primarily affects systems, it will also have an impact on the editorial processes, sales and marketing, warehouse management, accounting and cataloguing functions.
