The ISO 9001 supply chain

A short information brochure aimed at managers involved in the selection of suppliers and/or responsible for purchasing decisions in a business-to-business situation has been published by ISO. The document aims to provide guidance for managers who encounter suppliers claiming to have an ISO 9001-based QMS, and its topics include:

  • what is ISO 9001?
  • what does ‘conformity to ISO 9001’ really mean?
  • how does ISO 9001 help managers to select a suppliers?
  • how can managers have confidence that a supplier meets the requirements of ISO 9001?
  • can suppliers claim that their goods or services meet ISO 9001?
  • what to do if things go wrong

ISO secretary general Alan Bryden observed: ‘Within the context of the growth of international trade and global supply chains, ISO 9001 is being used by suppliers and customers located in different countries to establish initial confidence or even to select partners in the supply chain.’ He hoped that the brochure would these managers to ‘avoid unpleasant surprises and to use ISO 9001 to its full potential.’
