Facilitating billing

Customer billing should be made easier due to a new draft standard now out for consultation. The British Standards Institution (BSI) has issue a draft for public comment on customer billing, which provides a common set of ground rules so that suppliers of utility and other services (eg mobile phone and internet service providers) can provide clear, concise and accurate bills for their customers.

Service providers, particularly those in the utilities sector, invest considerable financial and other resources dealing with complaints and late payment resulting from misunderstandings and misinterpretations of their billing. According to BSI British standards committee manager, Brian Such: ‘Organizations that undertake periodic billing have a huge task to manage their billing process efficiently and effectively. This new specification will streamline the billing process and hopefully reduce customer enquiries as well.’

The draft standard specifies the minimum requirements for suppliers of services that carry out periodic billing, and the requirements apply to both the billing process and the billing document itself.
