New sustainability assurance scheme

IRCA and AccountAbility have jointly launched the world's first individual certification scheme in sustainability assurance, calling it the certified sustainability assurance practitioner program. This scheme aims to fill the need for assurance of non-financial and financial information as part of an organization's performance against sustainable development commitments, policies and strategies. It will be built on AccountAbility's AA1000 assurance standard that was launched in 2003.

As Maria Sillanpää, MD of AccountAbility, observed: 'The challenge in delivering effective practioner certification in this field is considerable and the development of this first iteration of the program has been informed by an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process. What we have delivered is the first version, created to enable structured dialogue. From this foundation we anticipate that the program will continuously develop as a result of stakeholder feedback and our own experiences in running the program.'

The program is intended for practitioners both internal and external to the organization whose performance is being assured, including but not restricted to those explicitly using AA1000. Click here to download the criteria for certification or for more information visit www.accountability.org.uk
