In anticipation of World Quality Day - which was held on 11 November 2004 - the Institute of Quality Assurance (IQA) conducted a survey to discover how quality professionals view their industry and to clarify the role quality has in improving business.
Fifty-eight per cent of the quality professionals surveyed believed that quality practices need to be reinvented for the 21st century. Forty-six per cent agreed that quality professionals were failing to translate their skills and processes into something relevant to business managers, and 79 per cent believed that fundamental to narrowing the communications gap is the combination of education and training.
As Frank Steer, IQA director general, observed: 'Too many in the profession are failing to package quality as a "must have" answer to critical business challenges and opportunities. The challenge for every professional services provider is to demonstrate relevance to top management. There was a virtually unanimous agreement that British business would benefit if it communicated better.'
