The environment around the world cultural heritage site of Angkor in Cambodia is to be protected by ISO 14001. Half a million tourists a year visit the historic temples of Angkor Wat and Bayon, and with tourism rapidly increasing it is becoming more and more necessary to preserve such culturally important sites.
Bun Narith, who is president executive director of the Authority for the Protection and Management of Angkor and Region of Siem Reap (APSARA), said in ISO's magazine ISO Management Systems: 'Following similar increases in road and hotel construction, and in garbage and waste water, we at [APSARA] realized that something had to be done to address the problem of the environmental deterioration of Angkor. We became convinced of the need to implement an EMS to protect the site.'
Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen observed: 'I was very much impressed by the proposal that APSARA made to me last year for the introduction of the EMS based upon ISO 14001. The plan represents a landmark effort to conserve the environment surrounding Angkor. and I would like them to succeed in this challenge to achieve the goal of implementing the EMS by all means.'
