Food standard update - ISO 22000

The new standard, ISO 22000, 'Food safety management systems - requirements throughout the food chain', is expected to be available as an international standard in 2005. At present it is at the stage of draft international standard.

ISO 22000 defines the needs of a food safety management system in the food chain where an organization must show its control of hazards to meet agreed requirements and to increase customer satisfaction. The standard can stand alone or in combination with other management system standards, and with or without independent third party certification.

As food-related hazards can be introduced anywhere in the food chain, food safety should be the result of a combined effort of all those in the chain. Thus, ISO 22000 would be helpful to a range of organizations, such as feed producers, transport and storage operators and subcontractors, all the way through to food service outlets, and organizations that have an impact throughout the supply chain, such as producers of equipment, packaging material and cleaning agents.
