Ice hockey safety

Ice hockey is not known to be a gentle sport and the regular head and face injuries sustained by the players are evidence of this. ISO has come to the rescue by introducing an international standard for evaluating the performance of head and face protectors.

The frequency and severity of injuries is expected to be reduced by the new standard ISO 10256:2003, head and face protection for use in ice hockey, which specifies performance requirements and test methods for safety equipment used in the game. It is intended to support manufacturers in the design of helmets and face guards, which protect players and referees by distributing and dampening the impact of a hockey stick or puck.

Fans of ice hockey should not worry, the standard aims to reduce serious injury without compromising the appearance or appeal of the game, and the International Ice Hockey Federation has given its approval.

ISO 10256 provides performance characteristics for construction, shock absorption, puck impact resistance, penetration, retention system properties, field of vision, marking and information of head and face protectors. This means everything is covered by one standard, rather than the multitude of standards that existed previously.
