ISO 24510 and other new water standards
Over a billion people around the world do not have access to safe water with the result that diarrhoeal diseases kill 5,000 children every day. In recognition of this the International Standards Organization has published three standards (ISO 24510, ISO 24511 and ISO 24512) that provide guidelines to water authorities and their operators on how to achieve sustainable levels of quality in drinking water and sanitation.
Jean-Luc Redaud, chair of the technical committee that developed the standards, said: ‘A strong orientation towards developing countries was taken in order to support [them] in the application of these standards. A first trial has been launched in some African countries.’
