Maritime
The ISM code is designed to ensure safety at sea, prevent human
injury or loss of life and avoid damage to the marine environment
.The code was created by the International
Maritime Organisation (IMO) in 1993 and became mandatory
in the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea
(SOLAS).
The IRCA Maritime Safety Management Systems (ISM Code) auditor
programme has been developed to provide auditor training and certification
within the marine industry. Maritime auditors are certified
to operate only within this sector (and not as a general quality
management systems auditor, or within any other sector environment).
The programme is operated by IRCA in partnership with The
Nautical Institute.
This is not a stand-alone programme, it must be considered in
addition to the core programme requirements detailed in the
QMS 1994 auditor programme.
Benefits to organizations
- Confidence that IRCA certified auditors have the appropriate
training and skills
Benefits to certification bodies
- Re-assurance that IRCA auditors employed to audit maritime
organizations' quality management systems against the ISM
code are competent and committed to continuing professional
development
Benefits to auditors
- Recognition that you can conduct process-based audits competently
against the ISM code for clients world-wide and additional
formal registration on the IAQG international database.
